Intra-aortic Balloon Counterpulsation (IABC) therapy is the most widely used means of circulatory support in patients experiencing LV failure. Well known effects of IABC include an increase in diastolic blood pressure and, thus, coronary perfusion with a concomitant decrease in afterload that leads to an increase in stroke volume and cardiac output.* Today, insertion of the IAB can be initiated rapidly with relative ease and safety. The technological advances have permitted a wide range of hospitals, large and small, to take advantage of this potentially life-saving therapy.
